INTERNATIONAL HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY

January 27, 2021 by templekol
Wednesday, January 27, 2021 is the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz in 1945. In the United States, it is commemorated as International Holocaust Memorial Day. This year, the Jewish commemoration, Yom HaShoah, starts the evening of Thursday, April 8 and ends the evening of Friday, April 9, 2021.

TU BISHEVAT SEDER

Wednesday, January 27, 2021 at 7 PM we will have a Zoom Tu Bishevat Seder. This annual celebration known as the “New Year of the Trees” has its own Haggadah and rituals involving significant drinks (wine/grape juice) and foods as well as discussion topics. If at all possible, please join us for this event.

It is time for our annual TU B’SHEVAT SEDER.  Unfortunately, it will be on Zoom this year, for obvious reasons.  Fortunately, I think that we can have a rather reasonable Seder on Zoom, which is designed for discussions, a major part of these Seders.
Join us for one of our most enjoyable celebrations of the Jewish year.  If you haven’t attended previously, come this year to get a little bit of a taste of what you have been missing. The relaxed, informal conversations, fueled by 4 cups of wine, is a chance to get to know more about each other. Let’s see if we can all really enjoy this celebration and get it as close to normal as possible.
The Haggadah will be on the screen, so no need to get one on line.  I can adjust the font size so as to easily accommodate those of us who are near sighted.
You have your choice about how you want to participate.
  1.  The easiest way to participate is to just attend and join in on the prayers and discussions for the 4 different topics.
  2. Another way to participate is to purchase a few foods and scents for each of the 4 segments.
    a. For the first segment one you will need one or more of the following foods:  Walnuts | Almonds | Pomegranates | Coconuts | Pistachios               b. For the second segment you will need one or more of the following foods: Cherries | Olives | Plums | Apricots | Avocado                                         c. For the third segment you will need one or more of the following foods:  Grapes | Raisins | Apples | Pears | Blueberries | Raspberries                   d. For the final segment you will need one or more of the following scents: Cinnamon | Rosemary | Bay Leaf | Cedar
  3. Now, the way to participate fully is to purchase 1 bottle of kosher white wine and 1 bottle of kosher red wine and maybe get a little shicker while enjoying the discussions and the foods.    The bad news is that we won’t virtually be together.  Ther good news is that nobody will have to drive home at the end of the Seder.  BTW, kosher wine is recommended, but during an epidemic, you need to make do with whatever is available.
Since Seders are normally a family event, please feel free to invite your friends and family.  They will easily be able to participate from anywhere in the country or even in the world.  For example, Lori Battelle has attended some services from Texas.  Judah Maccabee has been attending our Friday night Shazoom services from Guam, and Avi Levi has been attending from Israel.
Let’s work together to make this a memorable, pandemic, holiday celebration. We hope to see you there.
